Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, and Light

Saturday 3rd November, 12:00h - 13:00h

Theater 1

“Provocative… passionate… Shlain points out uncanny parallels between the visual representations… He is an engaging story teller, skilled in the use of metaphor, analogy and even imaginary journeys that at times are poetic… Dr. Shlain’s discussion of artistic images and his demonstrations of how these images can be used to describe the impenetrable ideas of physics are important.”

-New York Times

Leonard Shlain is the author of two critically acclaimed, award-winning books.  Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, and Light, and The Alphabet Versus The Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image.  The Washington Post called AVG “Bold and fascinating,” The LA Times called A&P “A Tour de Force.” George Steiner in the London Observer wrote that AVG was “Provocative and Innovative.” The New York Times’ Idea Section discussed his original and compelling theories. David Gergen interviewed Dr. Shlain for The Jim Lehrer News Hour and Frank Stasio did the same for National NPR.

His recent work, Sex, Time & Power: How Women’s Sexuality Shaped Human Evolution explores the reasons why Homo sapiens evolved so far away from other animals in several key attributes.  The San Francisco Chronicle had this to say, “....Shlain has returned with a fascinating story in tow, replete with another audacious hypothesis (or 10) to keep a reader's mind as hot and humming as a Macintosh laptop. His new book will forever affect your notions about sex, time and power, and you might just look at your mate with eyes opened wider...Shlain fuses ideas and facts from a wide array of disciplines to create a coherent, convincing and captivating narrative.”

Shlain is working on a new book, Leonardo’s Brain: The Right/Left Roots of Creativity.  He lives and writes in Mill Valley, California.
